Greene County in Indiana is one of the cheapest places to live. Rent is usually $300-$600. Utilities are pretty low too. We are paying less than $1000 per month for everything. There are not many jobs here but there are in nearby counties.

Lisha - utilities including phone and cable should not cost $1,190 a month!!!

  • Cut your cable bill completely or subscribe to the basic service only. Average basic service is $70 a month. Are your Internet, cable, and home phone services bundled? That's probably not the best financial option if the introductory rate has expired.
  • If you have a cell phone, you need a plan that is more economical. I pay $45 a month for unlimited long distance and 600 minutes during the month. If your kids have cell phones, their minutes should be limited or they should have pre-pay phones to control minutes/expenses.
  • My home phone bill, with a long distance plan, is $60 a month. My family may switch completely to cell later this year to avoid this additional expense.
  • Total expense for cable, cell phone and home phone in my house? $175 a month.

If you don't have central air or heat, what are using for those utilities?

We liked northwestern Tenn. when we lived there. Had relatives in Okla., and that's not a bad little state either. In Wisconsin now. Avoid it. Property taxes, liberal government, and heating costs are not good.

Housing is so cheap in Indianapolis that even the poorest usually have a solid roof over their head. I'm not sure they stack up so well on employment/income, but I was amazed by how cheap rent and mortgages are there.

Tennessee works for me too. My real estate taxes in New York are about $9000, add another $3400 for school tax and I've never had a child in the school system. In Tennessee I have a much smaller house, about one third the size and value of my NY home, but the taxes are only about $450 total per year, NO SCHOOL TAX!!! The schools are funded by the slightly higher sales tax (I say slightly higher because I pay 8.125% sales tax in NY and Tenn sales tax is 9% or so). So lets see, $12400 for taxes in NY and $450 for taxes in Tenn, MMmmmm. I can hardly wait to sell my home in NY so I can move permenantly. Another Joe

I agree. I used to live in Virginia Beach, VA and was paying $900 a month for rent, $35 for water, $70 for electric, $65 for cable and internet. Not including other things like gas which is over $4.00 a gallon. I had a decent apt about 800 square feet 1b/1ba. Employment is good in the area and finding a job that pays $12.00 is simple even with no experience. But in the end it still runs real tight. If you are just one person you just barely make it. I know teachers with masters who make 40,000 a year and it still tight.

So I decided to move. I chose Tennessee. It took me 8 hours to get here. I did not know anything about the state nut was I surprised. Here it goes.

Before I moved I applied for a job out here, set up my interview and when I got here stayed with family for about a week.

I got the job. I searched for an apt. I found one. I got a job making a little less than I was in Virginia Beach but thats ok.

My apt is a little bigger than the one in virginia beach. It cost me $395 a month that includes water. There is no traffic and its in the mountains close to ETSU. Gas is cheaper about 3.60 a gallon. People are friendly and keep to themselves unlike in the city where everyone is in your business.

You dont have to pay to have your car inspected, can have one plate, etc.

Tax is higher here I believe its 9% where virginia was 4.5%

also Frobes ranks it as one of the best places to start a business.

Cant really beat it. Plus I'm happy.
