From LoveToKnow Save
Looking for little ways to save money can help you balance your household budget and start your journey on the path to frugal living.
Little Ways to Save Money Throughout the Day
Obviously, comparison shopping before major purchases, using credit cards wisely, and taking proper care of your belongings can help you save money. However, there are plenty of other small habits you can adapt to maximize your savings potential throughout the day.
Morning
- Turn off the water when brushing your teeth. This simple yet often overlooked habit is one of many little ways to save money throughout the day.
- Make an effort to avoid product waste. For example, most people use more toothpaste, mouthwash, and hair gel than what is truly necessary.
- Enjoy coffee you made yourself instead of stopping at a high-priced coffee shop for your morning caffeine fix.
- Don't forget to eat breakfast! Whether you prefer cereal and milk or scrambled eggs and sausage, breakfast foods tend to be among the greatest bargains in the grocery store. When you eat breakfast, you'll keep your energy level up and reduce the temptation to splurge on pricier foods later in the day.
- Adjust the thermostat before you leave for work. Turning the temperature up a few degrees in the summer or down a few degrees in the winter can make a surprising difference in your utility bills.
- Walk, take public transportation, or carpool to work.
Afternoon
- Pack a lunch instead of going out.
- Instead of buying a newspaper or magazine to read on your lunch break, check out the publication's Web site for free articles.
- If you tend to sip soda throughout the day, work on cutting back by gradually replacing one beverage with a glass of water. If plain water doesn't satisfy, try adding a squeeze of lemon for flavor.
- Make it your policy to say no to requests from coworkers who want you to contribute to their children's fundraisers, charity drives, or gift exchanges.
Night
- Save time and money by combining errands such as grocery shopping or mailing packages into one weekly trip. To reduce impulse buys, get in the habit of making a shopping list the day before.
- When you get home, change out of your work clothes and into something more comfortable. Instead of taking your clothes to the cleaners, however, invest in a home dry cleaning kit to do it yourself. Products such as Dryel or Woolite Dry Cleaner's Secret can do an excellent job cleaning many garments.
- When doing the laundry, hang your clothes out to dry instead of using your dryer. If you don't have room for a clothesline outside, invest in an indoor drying rack.
- Save money by preparing one meatless meal per week. Even if you have no plans to adopt a vegetarian diet in the future, making spaghetti and garlic bread or tomato soap and grilled cheese sandwiches is an easy way to save some cash.
- Run the dishwasher only when you have a full load. If you do dishes once per day, it isn't necessary to pre-rinse the dishes in most cases.
- Avoid a trip to the video store by seeing if your local library offers movies you can check out for free. Some libraries also have computer games available!
- Clip and organize coupons while watching television.
- Empty all the spare change from your pockets into a large glass jar. When the jar is full, add it to a savings account designated for a special purchase such as a family vacation or needed home repairs.
- Turn off all unnecessary lights and appliances before you go to bed.
