Discount Rug
From LoveToKnow Save
A discount rug is perfect for a family room, play room, basement, or other areas that might get a lot of foot and play traffic, but don’t need a fancy floor covering. Area rugs are cheaper than traditional carpeting and can still change a room’s appearance for the better.
What to Look For in a Discount Rug
Though rugs add warmth and color, they can also be expensive. Fortunately, a discount rug is easy to find. You’d be surprised at how many shops in your area are offering great bargains on rugs and carpets.
- Before you purchase a discount rug, ask yourself why it’s so cheap. Is it simply because the store is having a sale or that it’s an outdated model, or is there something wrong with the rug? For previously-owned rugs, check for worn marks, cigarette burns, stains, holes, and other damage.
- When choosing an area rug, choose a size 10-to-15 inches smaller than the size of your room. Leave enough bare floor to create a border.
- Check the “pile.” If the rug has a dense pile it will last longer than a rug with a low pile count.
- Choose a light colored rug for a small room, as it will make it look larger.
- To give a room warmth, choose a dark color.
- When purchasing your rug, don’t forget to buy a roll of double-sided tape. Taping down the rug will keep it secure and prevent accidents.
- Though not always soft, wool rugs are a good buy because of their durability.
- Always comparison shop. Just because retailers promises discounts doesn’t make it so.
Carpet Stores
Carpet stores can be great places to find a discount rug. If you wait until sale days you might find a discount. If the color isn’t a big issue, for instance if you’re carpeting a basement play area, you might be able to negotiate on an outdated style or color.
You might also be able to purchase carpet remnants at less than cost. You’d be surprised at how accommodating a carpet salesperson can be. Let him know you’re in the market for a discount rug and he’ll show you the cheapest options.
Garage and Estate Sales
Garage and estate sales can yield some wonderful treasures. In fact, most homeowners are offering their items up for sale just so someone will take them off their hands. The advantage you'll have purchasing from a garage sale is how most prices are negotiable. Even if the homeowner won’t budge, you’re sure to walk away with a bargain. It might a different case for an estate sale, but you still might find some good deals, especially if the rug isn’t a popular color.
Home Improvement Stores
Home improvement stores such as Lowes or Home Depot also carry rugs and carpet. If you’re looking for a discount rug, you can’t beat the sales at these local home improvement center. Look for coupons or shop when items are marked down.
Search the Internet, too, for coupons to further your discount.
