Cheap Children’s Books
From LoveToKnow Save
While your child may be satisfied to read his favorite book over and over...and over, it's always nice to have a larger selection of cheap children's books on hand. It's really not all that difficult to find children's books at a discount.
Book Clubs
You can join a children's book club. Typically, when you first become a member of this club, you're offered a number of books for a bargain price.
For instance, if you join the Children's Book of the Month Club, you will receive eight books for just a couple of dollars. You have a minimum amount of books to purchase in order to fulfill your contract. You'll be offered the Book of the Month each month, and you will have the opportunity to turn down the offer. Books are recommended to you based on the age range of your child. Often, sale prices are offered on books that your child will surely love. While some of the book prices seem a little high, it's a nice way to have constant access to books that you may not find locally.
Online Options
Amazon has been the online leader for book bargains for a long time. They have an expansive offering of children's books, some deeply discounted. The site lists the top sellers, reviews and detailed descriptions of each book. This is an excellent site to look to for cheap children's books.
Another recommended site to check is Book Closeouts. They have numerous books priced under $7 for children of all ages.
You may be able to find children's ebooks or other stories online as well. You'll find many classic tales offered in public domain.
Used Book Sales
One of the best places to hit when you're looking for cheap children's books is your local library. Libraries usually have an annual book sale where they discard old books or multiple copies. You can find some great bargains for children at these sales. Often, public libraries will have price tags of only 50 cents!
Another great option is garage sales. While you may not always find items in other categories worth buying, garage sales can be a treasure chest of goodies for your children. Books are often sold for a quarter a piece. These books may not be in perfect condition, but they're good stories, just the same.
You may also find that a visit to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill store will yield some wonderful cheap children's books.
Time of Year
Another thing to consider is the time of year that you're shopping. If you can keep careful track of your children's books, you can pick up some deeply discounted books after each holiday. For instance, after Christmas books are usually discounted by at least 50 percent. While these books might not be good reads until next Christmas, you'll have a nice supply of new books for when the holiday rolls around again.
Closeout or Outlet Stores
Stores such as Tuesday Morning or Big Lots often have a wide array of children's books at bargain prices. Ask store management what days they typically get their shipments in, and check back on those days for first dibs on new deals.
Less Conventional Options for Cheap Children's Books
While all of the options listed thus far are pretty traditional, there are a couple of other not so common methods of finding cheap children's books.
One of these is Bookcrossing. It's defined as the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others. Once finished, the next reader passes the book along. These books are journaled about and listed online at the Bookcrossing website. Since this is a relatively new concept, you may not be able to just go out and find a book. However, as this concept grows in popularity, this option may become more viable in the future.
If you've got some books you're willing to part with, Paperback Swap might be an option you can use to acquire some cheap children's books. This site requires you to list nine books you are willing to get rid of. After you've listed nine, you earn three credits. With those three credits, you search through the titles and choose three books you'd like to receive. It's basically a barter system and the only cost you'll ever incur is the price of shipping the book via media mail, which is under $2. It's a great way to build up your supply of children's books, as long as you have some books you'd be willing to share with others.

Books are very important to a child's education, just like many toys are. It's sometimes expensive to build up a library for your child. If you keep your eyes and options open, though, you'll share many wonderful stories, inexpensively, for years to come.
